Three forts, the first of which was constructed in 1851 on this site near the Santa Fe Trail, served as headquarters and supply depot for the Military Department of New Mexico. A 1.5-mi trail leads visitors past the ruins of the last two forts. Wagon ruts along the Santa Fe Trail are visible here. The monument was established on April 5, 1956.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Picnicking, touring the ruins. Facilities: Visitor center, museum, guided and self-guided tours, hiking trails. Book and map sales, picnic tables. Programs & Events: Self-guided tours. Guided walks, talks (weekends spring and fall, daily June-Aug.). First Fort Site Tour (June), Cultural Encounters on the Santa Fe Trail (July), An Evening at Fort Union (Aug.), living-history demonstrations (during special events). Tips & Hints: Plan to spend two hours. Self-guided 1.5-mi walking tour takes llA hours. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Dec. and Jan.

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

Entrance fee: $3 adults, free ages 17 and under. Don't climb on walls or foundations of ruins. Stay on trail to avoid rattlesnakes in the tall grass. First fort arsenal site closed to public. No pets in buildings, leashed pets permitted on trails only. Monument open mid-Apr.-Memorial Day, daily 8-5; Memorial Day-late Oct., daily 8-6; late Oct.-mid-Apr., daily 8-4.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

8 mi north of 1-25 (Exit 366) at end of Rte. 161. Closest airport: Las Vegas, NM (20 mi), Albuquerque (153 mi).
