Georgian Bay Islands, Ontario

Established: 1929   Acreage: 3500

Since the early days of the twentieth century, the Georgian Bay region has served as a holiday resort. Its cool blue waters, jutting capes and a variety of picturesque islands have combined to attract campers, boaters, fishermen and artists. Nature was lavish in the provision of islands, which form an archipelago believed to contain at least 30,000 units.

For many thousands of years, people have been drawn to Georgian Bay. The first peoples may have lived here over 10,000 years ago, hunting and gathering. In the early seventeenth century, the area was occupied by the Ojibwa in the north and east, the Huron in the south and the Petun on the Bruce Peninsula. The Ojibwa fished and hunted, while the Huron and Peton farmed. As European cultures moved into the area, the focus moved away from major food sources to the development of trade routes on Georgian Bay. Voyageur canoes plied the waters from the head of Lake Superior with furs destined for Montreal. The sheltered routes through Georgian Bay offered many advantages over the open water of Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

The famous Canadian Group of Seven captured the beauty of the area in many of their paintings. The hard granite and gneiss rock of these islands has changed little over the past 8000 years. Today, Georgian Bay Islands National Park is in the heart of Canada's vacationland. The islands offer many recreational activities—camping, picnicking and hiking — and visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, boating and fishing in the surrounding waters.
