Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

In southwestern New Mexico, north of Silver City

A glimpse of 13th-century Native American life can be seen at these well-preserved cliff dwellings. Homes rise up into the sheer, pale rock faces, looking much as they did when they were inhabited from around 1280 through the early 1300s. The Gila Wilderness surrounding the cliffs has numerous hiking trails, horseback riding paths, and back-country campsites. The monument was proclaimed in 1907 and transferred to the Park Service in 1933.
