Mount Revelstoke, British Columbia

Established: 1914   Acreage: 64,896

Mount Revelstoke, a majestic and unspoiled national park, offers a unique perspective on mountain contrasts. The slow and scenic drive on Summit Road leads from the Columbia Forest—a dense rainforest of giant cedar, hemlock, white pine and Devil's club—through subalpine forest to meadows where scarlet Indian paintbrush, white valerian, yellow arnica and blue lupine create a kaleidoscope of colors.

From the summit of Mount Revelstoke, there is an excellent view of the ice-clad peaks of the Monashee Range, and the sharp peaks of the Selkirk Ranges line the eastern horizon. Below are the valleys of the Columbia and Illecillewaet rivers.

Hiking in the park's trails gives summer visitors the chance to explore a variety of lifezones in the Columbia Mountains. A short, easy hike along Mountain Meadows Trail leads through a wildflower area to a crevice named The Icebox.' Giant Cedars Trail winds through a stand of red cedars nearly 1000 years old. Trails to Eva, Miller and Jade lakes are longer, more challenging hikes, and offer fishing in subalpine water. In winter, the deep and lasting snow lets visitors enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
