Four segments of the proposed 694-mi trail have been constructed within the boundaries of the Natchez Trace Parkway (see below), a 444-mi motor road commemorating the historic old Natchez Trace network of trails created by local Native American tribes and later used by explorers, missionaries, and settlers. A 20-mi segment in Tennessee is south of Franklin, near the community of Leipers Fork. In Mississippi a 6-mi segment near Tupelo, a 21-mi segment in Ridgeland near Jackson, and a 10-mi segment at the Rocky Springs camping area near Port Gibson, MS, are open to the public.
