Two separate historic areas are preserved in this important park: the ruins of the 15th-century Pueblo of Pecos, and the site of the Civil War battle at Glorieta Pass. Several old buildings are the attractions of Pecos, including the remains of two 17th- and 18th-century Spanish colonial missions. Sections of the Santa Fe Trail are threaded throughout the terrain, and the area also includes the former Forked Lightning cattle ranch and Kowlowskis Trading Post. Pecos National Monument was authorized in 1965 and redesignated in 1990.
