This former major trade center, and once one of the most populous regions of the Pueblo world during the 17th century, is composed of three distinct sections of stone ruins. Built between 1622 and 1660 by the Tompiros and Tiwa people, the Abo, Quarai, and gran Quivira pueblos were abandoned in the 1670s after drought, famine, and attacks by hostile tribes. Gran Quivira was proclaimed a national monument in 1909, and Abo and Quarai became monuments in 1981, when Salinas was established.
