Alexander Hamilton, American patriot, co-author of the Federalist Papers, and first U.S. Treasury Secretary, built the Grange on Manhattans Upper West Side in 1802. The Grange, named after the Hamilton family's ancestral home in Scotland, served as his home for two years. On July 11, 1804, Hamilton was fatally wounded in a duel with his political rival, Aaron Burr. The memorial was authorized on April 27, 1962.

Touring renovated parts of house, viewing exterior of building. Facilities: Partially renovated house. Programs & Events: Ranger-guided tours (hourly), period music. Hamilton's Birthday (Sun. nearest Jan. 11). Tips & Hints: Busiest June and July, least crowded Jan. and Feb.

HOW TO GET THERE
The house is at 287 Convent Ave., between W. 141st and W. 142nd Sts., in New York City. From 1-87 (Major Deegan Expressway), take Exit 4 (E. 149th St). Go west on 149th St. across bridge onto W. 145th St.; west on 145th St. six blocks to Convent Ave.; south four blocks to house. The 1 or 9 subway trains, which run along 7th Ave ./Broadway, stop at the W. 137th St. station on Broadway, two blocks west and five blocks south of Hamilton Grange. The A, B, C, and D subway trains stop at the W. 145th St. station on St. Nicholas Ave., four blocks north and two blocks east of Hamilton Grange. Frequent bus service is provided on Broadway two blocks to the west by routes M-4 and M-5, on Amsterdam Ave. one block to the west by routes M-100 and M-101, and by route BX-19 operating crosstown on 145th St. Half-hourly bus service on Convent Ave. is provided by route M-18. Closest airports: JFK and LaGuardia (New York); Newark (New Jersey).
