Established by Canadian fur trader John Grant and expanded by cattle baron Conrad Kohrs, the site was the headquarters for one of the largest 19th-century range ranches in the country. The 1,500-acre park is maintained today as a working ranch, and the 90 historic structures serve as a living museum of the frontier cattle industry of the 1860s-1930s. The site was authorized in 1972.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Bird-watching; observing cattle, poultry, and horses; touring ranch and outbuildings; walking nature trail. Facilities: Visitor center, guided and self-guided tours, hiking trails. Bookstore. Programs & Events: Ranger-led ranch house tours, self-guided walks of ranch outbuildings. Living-history programs on blacksmithing, chuck-wagon cooking, 1890s cowboy life (May-Sept.). Western Heritage Days (2nd full weekend, July). Tips & Hints: Plan two hours for visit. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Jan. and Feb.

Free. No smoking or pets beyond parking lot or visitor center areas. Site open June-Aug., daily 8-5:30, Sept.-May, daily 9-4:30.
HOW TO GET THERE
Via 1-90 to Deer Lodge exit; follow signs, park at north end of town. Closest airports: Butte (36 mi), Helena (60 mi), and Missoula (80 mi).
