This former major trade center, and once one of the most  populous regions of the Pueblo world during the 17th century, is  composed of three distinct sections of stone ruins. Built between 1622  and 1660 by the Tompiros and Tiwa people, the Abo, Quarai, and gran  Quivira pueblos were abandoned in the 1670s after drought, famine, and  attacks by hostile tribes. Gran Quivira was proclaimed a national  monument in 1909, and Abo and Quarai became monuments in 1981, when  Salinas was established.

Picnicking, touring ruins and museum, watching video.  Facilities: Visitor center, guided and self-guided tours, museum, movie,  hiking trails. Picnic area. Programs & Events: Ranger-led tours (by  request), self-guided tours. Tips & Hints: Busiest July-Sept.,  least crowded Dec. and Jan.

HOW TO GET THERE     
Visitor center 1 block west of intersection of U.S. 60 and Rte.  55; to Abo, continue 9 mi west via U.S. 60 and 1 mi north on Rte. 513;  to Quarai head 8 mi north on Rte. 55 and 1 mi west; to Gran Quivira head  25 mi south on Rte. 55. Closest airport: Albuquerque (70 mi).
