Poverty Point National Monument/State Historic Site in northeastern Louisiana, near Epps.
Owned and funded by the Louisiana Office of State Parks, this  402-acre site interprets the culture of the peoples who constructed  prehistoric earthworks here between 1700 and 700 bc. The observation  tower offers views of much of their terrain, while a museum, an  archeological laboratory, interpretive trails, and audiovisual programs  tell the stories of these ancient local residents. Tram tours and craft  workshops bring Native American cultural traditions to life. The site  was designated a national monument on October 31, 1988.
