The memorial commemorates St. Louis's role in the westward growth of the United States from 1803 through 1890. Important buildings here include the city's Old Courthouse, built between 1839 and 1862, and the Gateway Arch, an internationally renowned 1965 structure designed by Eero Saarinen. The fascinating Museum of Westward Expansion chronicles the region's growth westward during the 19th century. The memorial was established on December 20, 1935.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Riding to the top of the arch, touring museum and courthouse, viewing films. Facilities: Visitor center, information kiosks, museum, movies. Book-and-gift shops. Programs & Events: Ranger-guided tours. African-American Heritage Month (Feb.), St. Louis Storytelling Festival (1st weekend, May), Patriotic 4th of July, Victorian Christmas (Dec). Tips & Hints: Park in garage at north end of grounds on Washington Ave. Lot on south end handles oversize vehicles (higher than 7 feet). Gateway Arch requires hiking up at least 96 nonstandard steps. Inform ranger beforehand about fear of heights or confined spaces. Arrive lA-l hour ahead of reservation time for security check. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Jan. and Feb.
FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS
Entrance fee: $3 adults, free ages 16 and under; $6 per family. Separate charges for arch ride and films. Old Courthouse free. Leashed pets only on grounds. No in-line skating, skateboarding, and other recreational activities, except walking and jogging. Gateway Arch and visitor center open Memorial Day-Labor Day, daily 8 am-10 pm; Labor Day-Memorial Day, daily 9-6. Old Courthouse open daily 8-4:30.
